Cooley, K. (2010), “Understanding recidivism among juvenile offenders: Perspectives of “experts” in Polk County, Iowa”.

This is a thesis dissertation on the causes of juvenile recidivism. This report examines various viewpoints on the outcomes of juvenile programs and rehabilitation initiatives. Cooley points out that while there have been earlier studies on the reasons of recidivism in urban youth, there has only been a small amount of research on factors that contribute to recidivism in rural youth. Cooley interviews nine people from three juvenile prison rehabilitation programs to gain their views on the issues and propose remedies. Cooley further investigates how rehabilitation may affect juvenile recidivism.

Second Chance Kids takes us behind the scenes of the campaign against mandatory life sentences for juveniles. This documentary follows two juvenile lifers, Anthony Rolon and Joe Donovan, through the hard era of the 1990s and the creation of the "superpredator." Both men were found guilty as adults and condemned to life in prison without the possibility of release in Massachusetts. This film follows the important Supreme Court decisions that enabled these two lifers to be released, as well as how our juvenile justice system has evolved in light of new scientific knowledge.
