Safety of Subway Stations |
I’d like to address the safety of subway systems in New York
City. There are growing concerns from the residents of the city regarding subway
crime as well as the safety of station itself.
There has been an increase of crime in subway stations. Some
of the statistics include the following:
Ø
The New York subway has seen 119 felony assaults
halfway through 2021.
Ø
In addition to murders, felonies-which include
murders, rapes, and assaults- saw a steep 53.7% increase over the last two
years.
Ø
Subway ridership has halved from what it was
before COVID-19 hit US shores, with many riders fearing quieter trains and
platforms are more dangerous.
Additionally, with the increase of crimes in the subways,
people fear being pushed on the tracks. Although the department has given tips
regarding what to do if such event happens, there should be more preventative measure.
Some of these measures can include:
Ø
Putting rails in the spaces where doors don’t open.
Ø
Increase police presence.
Ø
Increase surveillance (i.e., cameras).
All of these methods can be cost effective when implemented
correctly. It is important to address the safety concerns of residents.
Implementing these measures will ultimately increase the number of subway
riders.
Thank you for taking the time to read this memorandum. If
you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me via
email or phone.
